Editorial standards

Pet health is a topic where being confidently wrong causes real harm. These are the rules this site holds itself to.

Sourcing

1. Every numeric claim cites a source, inline, on the page where it appears.
2. Sources are ranked: peer-reviewed research, then clinical guidelines, then established veterinary references. Marketing pages and pet blogs are never cited as evidence for a figure.
3. Where a widely repeated figure has no traceable origin, we say that instead of laundering it into a fact.
4. The full bibliography lives on the sources page, and each entry states what we actually use it for.

Stating limits

Every calculator names the range of ages, weights, or breeds it is valid for, and says what happens outside that range. We would rather return "we cannot answer this accurately" than a confident number built on an extrapolation. The methodology page collects these limits in one place.

Authorship and review

Pages carry a named author, a publication date, and a last-updated date. The author is not a veterinarian and the site does not imply otherwise. When veterinary review is added, reviewed pages will name the reviewer and their credentials. We will never display a review byline for a review that did not happen.

Disclosure on AI assistance

AI tools are used in producing this site, for drafting, code, and formatting. They are not used as a source of fact. Every figure, formula, and citation is verified against the primary source by a human before it is published, because language models are fluent in exactly the kind of plausible-sounding number that this topic cannot afford.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we fix it and we say that we fixed it. Substantive corrections get a dated note on the affected page rather than a silent edit. Typos and formatting are fixed without ceremony.

To report an error, tell us the page, the figure you think is wrong, and ideally the source you believe is correct. Reports that cite a primary source are acted on fastest.

Review cadence

• Calculators: verified against their sources whenever those sources are revised.
• Guides: reviewed at least annually, with the date updated only when content actually changed.
• Clinical guidelines: checked when the issuing body publishes an update.

We do not bump "last updated" dates to game freshness signals. If the date moved, something on the page moved with it.
